Food noise reduction VS appetite suppression. Please tell me I'm not the only one that thinks it's different issues?

Summary

Are food noise and appetite suppression distinct effects of these medications, and how do they differ in practice?

Forum users consistently describe food noise as mental cravings, obsessive thoughts, and dopamine-driven urges separate from physical hunger or fullness. Experiences with tirzepatide, retatrutide, and cagrilintide show the two effects can occur independently, vary by dose and duration, and leave habits intact even when noise decreases. Retatrutide is often noted for stronger noise reduction while tirzepatide tends to increase fullness sensations more. Individual responses differ widely and some need higher or split doses to target noise without excessive side effects.

Hi, this is my first real post after the intro so please be gentle. I've been on T for some time and although I have no hunger problems and never did, I deal with constant food noise plus habitual and compulsive eating. I heard Tirz can help with addictions too so I tried it first. On tirz I notice appetite suppression but I still eat out of habit and by eat I mean binge. It feels bad but I'm used to overeating even when full and it's all driven by food noise rather than actual appetite. Online talks seem to mix the two ideas so I'm unsure how reliable those discussions are. I've looked into Cagri but descriptions say it targets food noise while also causing nausea and removing hunger which isn't the same thing. I want the cravings, nonstop food thoughts and dopamine chasing to stop; hunger matters less to me. Eating less or the same amount won't help much if the noise remains.

What duration does that period cover and which amount have you reached?

From what I've gone through so far, the two compounds clearly differ in how they hit me. I faced nearly the same spot you're describing right now, so you're definitely not the only one. Honestly I'm still sorting out how to tackle both issues at once in the most effective way. Once I began reta the drop in hunger felt like a small side effect next to the constant thoughts about food. It took roughly three months before those thoughts started to fade gradually. Even then occasional cravings popped up, so I added cagrilintide to shut them down completely. The initial half-milligram dose produced almost no change after seven days, which led me to raise it to one milligram while keeping reta at five. The other day I only managed coffee, a shake, and a quarter of my usual bowl, yet never sensed hunger and felt stuffed right away, something that works against holding onto muscle. Anyone claiming the added compound leaves them without any appetite at all is probably using more than they actually need, the same mistake I made. I have little to share about the other option, but I do know that trying different amounts has been part of the process for me and everyone else in this spot.

SharpHarbour71archiveJul 26

I've tried both Tirz and Reta so here's my take. Tirz left me feeling stuffed all the time so I could eat very little before becoming uncomfortably full yet it did little for my food noise or substance use. Reta had less impact on fullness but the thought of eating made me feel somewhat nauseous with a yuck reaction similar to stomach flu. Reta also cut my food noise a lot and nearly stopped my substance use though it had more sides. You might want to consider trying Reta at some point.

I felt both noise reduction and appetite suppression from day one but after six months on Tirz I now see them as totally separate. There have been times when appetite came back strongly yet food noise stayed gone the whole time. I think food noise is a brain effect from how the drug acts there while appetite relates to delayed gastric emptying which fades after about three months so the intense fullness lessens. Food noise equals brain effect and appetite equals physical effect.

Consider Eloralintide when it becomes more available and affordable. I'm just starting so it's too soon to say much. In general amylin works differently than glp-1 and gip with supposedly fewer sides greater appetite suppression and more weight loss when combined with tirz or reta.

KeenKettle50archiveJul 26

I think of food noise as wanting one specific thing to eat, while appetite means feeling like you gotta put something in your stomach so the hunger goes away.

SlowBramble67archiveJul 26

I define them the same way and you can have both at once. There's an urge to eat but you can't eat as much as the urge suggests.

PlainSignal90archiveJul 26

For me these represent distinct issues. The mental fixation on meals and desires to consume regardless of need or for enjoyment alone disappeared entirely with the medication. Physical hunger remains as a bodily signal separate from thoughts. My prior struggles centered on that mental aspect and the drive to eat compulsively rather than any lack of fullness. Appetite persists allowing pleasure from food at appropriate times and the medication eases maintaining my plan. Individual responses differ greatly. Some experience minimal mental cravings while hunger dominates for others possibly causing varied understandings. Regarding dosage and duration many require more to notice benefits. Exploring alternatives could prove useful given unique reactions to each. Predicting results with another type remains impossible beforehand. Persistence through adjustments typically yields positive outcomes.

Tirz made it really hard to eat carbs because I would keep falling asleep.

My experience with Tirzepitide was similar mainly habit. Habits drive food noise the most. I've built years of bad eating habits and my mind stays focused on the past. Even with Cagrilintide food noise remains because of long-term mental hand to mouth patterns. We reach a point where we need more distractions like fitness and recovery instead of eating for comfort.

AmberSignal47archiveJul 26

Leftovers sit in my refrigerator without me dwelling on them or tiptoeing over for a nibble most days. The change has produced a clear improvement in how my weight is trending and how calm I feel overall. For the first time since elementary school I sense a typical connection to eating. I stop when satisfied when actual hunger appears though the signal stays muted as if under a cover or when I simply recognize the body needs fuel. Serving sizes have shrunk a lot. Taking in eight hundred calories now feels like real work while four hundred leaves me comfortably full at present. I no longer map out the following meal because the constant urge has disappeared. This has been genuinely freeing.

PatientFenwick91archiveJul 26

I understand this well and see food noise and appetite as separate. You can still have food noise in the background while physically full which leads to bingeing or obsessing. I view noise as more psychological and appetite as physical. On reta it reduced noise somewhat at first but never made me feel physically full and eventually physical hunger became too strong to continue. When ravenously hungry thoughts of eating overpower everything turning it into both issues. I was only on cagri briefly because it did nothing for the psychological pull or physical hunger and just made me tired. On tirz my latest try it reduces physical hunger but I'm still unsure about the psychological noise reduction. It helps but not as strongly as hoped and I've only had two shots so far.

IronLantern24archiveJul 26

Yes food noise and appetite suppression are two different things for me. I've only taken reta but it killed food noise from the start. It took titrating up to 6mg and splitting the dose every 3.5 days to get steady appetite suppression with no sides.

LevelAlder29archiveJul 26

When I started tirz food noise suppression hit within 24 hours and I stayed on 2.5mg for the first two months. Now five months in at 6.5mg I've lost 34 pounds though titrating slowly. I still have normal hunger and eat when hungry for the most part. Yet even with the obsessive constant thinking about food gone almost completely except a few days around my cycle it took about a month to learn to eat well without bingeing. Food has been emotional and addictive my whole life so those habits take time to fade even with the meds especially if used to tolerating binge discomfort. It might help to clear trigger foods from home and swap for non-crave items or reward yourself with non-food treats for staying on track.

IronThistle80archiveJul 26

Reta killed my food noise including the desire to empty the cupboards every night. I used to stuff 6000 calories while cutting then feel bad for days. Earlier today I had three triangles of toblerone and put the rest back something I've never done before. Reta hasn't killed my appetite I still get hungry at meal times though I fill up faster.

BlueCinder57archiveJul 27

Yeah, I see how they vary too. This stuff has reduced a lot of those urges around eating. I rarely consider needing to find something to consume, and hunger isn't really there for me. In the afternoon hours I fill up fast, yet by nightfall it's like I could continue munching without end and it's simple to overdo it. If I quit because of timing issues, like limited break time, then I do feel content. But once evening arrives with free moments, there's almost no resistance so I nibble gradually till something stops me like bedtime or no more easy bites around. The urge isn't nearly as intense after dark compared to before, still I'm seldom actually starving yet persist in consuming. Good that this one is making a bit of difference anyway!

That thread caught my eye and gave me material to consider without any wordplay meant.

AmberMeadow80archiveJul 27

During the past four months while using the treatment I skipped getting any treats from the shop until recently picking up spicy chicken spread with tortilla crisps. After having a portion I hit fullness making more bites unappealing which felt unusual. The remains went back into the cooler. Crucially those items never crossed my mind again that evening another shift from my habits. This mystical elixir truly amazes me.

Excited for your results! Did you experiment with other GLP-1s in the past or was this one the initial attempt? Also wondering whether you feel this might have been possible earlier or if certainty arrived only after those four months.

SharpWillow45archiveJul 28

Sitting on the couch at 10pm watching Europeans eat American BBQ on YouTube creates food noise. Craving carbs after hard training when I probably haven't eaten enough could count as noise but I see it as biological feedback. My unwillingness to eat extra carbs comes from hunger suppression. That's how I look at it.

That must feel incredibly liberating! Thrilled things turned out well for you. Did you try a similar option earlier on? Did the changes kick in right away?

I'm also new but felt intense satiety right away on Reta at 2mg plus a strange food noise reduction that was completely new. I can walk past cookies desserts fried chicken and fries the family left out and keep going without taking any. I know it's odd that I look at the food and think it's strange I'm not eating it. It could be the meds or placebo from seeing results. Like most brain affecting chemicals it's hard to tell. I'm happy with the results so far and want to see how it goes with higher doses and time.

This compound marks my initial experience with anything in that category since nothing else has come up. As for the other query uncertainty lingers because my decision came down to a quick hunch about whatever option felt fitting right then.

IronThistle80archiveJul 28

It's extremely freeing to be honest I didn't expect this much impact. First GLP and yes pretty instant I took it around 9pm and could feel it the next morning. It lasts about five days or so while still in the loading phase.

RustMarble36archiveJul 31

Food noise for me means planning the next meal while eating thinking about leftovers or break room treats and taking the long way in the grocery store to avoid favorite snacks. Appetite means being ready for lunch an hour early not feeling full after a normal portion and struggling to sleep with a growling stomach. People without these issues say just eat until not hungry instead of full but that's nonsense because eating only enough to ease hunger leaves me ravenous again soon. Tirz and later Reta fixed all of it for me. Adding Cagri made no difference probably because suppression was already good. Reta adds extra burn on top but raises my heart rate so I'll switch back to Tirz for maintenance.

LevelTimber64archiveJul 31

Yeah I see your point these aren't comparable in the slightest. The distinction only became obvious once my mind quit dwelling on meals nonstop.

RustQuill56archiveJul 31

Totally agree they're different. I had great reduction with both on Tirz and with Reta my appetite stays suppressed but cravings remain a lot. I've kept losing weight and see it as a chance to change my relationship with food through moderation but it's hard.

I know many have written similar things about appetite suppression differing from food noise suppression. For me personally I don't notice a difference.

WarmMeadow92archiveAug 1

Studies are beginning to explore this idea of constant thoughts about eating, even though it's not yet a standard medical idea. Researchers treat these thoughts as connected to but separate from actual hunger feelings. They emphasize that it's more about the mind dwelling on food rewards that clash with bigger plans, rather than just feeling empty. You notice it when food pops into your head because of something around you, without any real body need. Like planning what to eat next right in the middle of a meal. It's possible to have a stomach that's satisfied yet thoughts racing about snacks, or to need food but not be fixated on it at all. They operate on separate levels.

WryMarble89archiveAug 2

Yeah, totally agree. Our staff lounge always has those sweet treats available. After beginning reta, I barely touch any of them now. A single nibble tends to be plenty for me. Food like that holds no appeal anymore. The others in the office can't believe how strong my discipline is, ha.

LevelPebble88archiveAug 5

I observed a sharp separation in two outcomes. Lower amounts reduced hunger but the impulse to consume remained often. This was uncomfortable for both body and thoughts. Nutrition quality dropped and weight came off very gradually with one drug or even added with the other. It appeared to get to the bowels yet bypass the head. The starting quantity that delivered the awaited indifference to eating most times was that split dose for the initial substance. It had gotten to the mind at last. It disappeared in around a month but returned once I went up in the split amount. So in addition to the peptide kind the quantity can matter as well.
