What dose of reta and calorie deficit are you at?

30 replies24 peopleMay 8, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

What retatrutide doses and calorie deficits are people using for weight loss?

Users share personal stats including age, gender, weekly reta doses from 0.5 mg up to 9 mg, and daily deficits mostly between 300-1500 calories. Nearly everyone stresses that weight loss only happens with a consistent deficit and that the medication mainly helps by curbing hunger. Many also lift weights, track protein, and combine reta with tirzepatide or other peptides. Results vary widely even at similar doses and deficits.

What this discussion establishesWhere people disagree

Whether retatrutide meaningfully raises basal metabolic rate beyond its effect on intake, and how much that matters for calculating deficits.

How to accurately measure individual calorie expenditure while on the medication, especially with conditions like Hashimoto’s.

Nothing here is advice.

People vary in how they react to eating plans and meds, yet I'm curious about the results from pairing reta with a calorie cut versus using just one or the other. Share your age, gender, reta amounts, and any deficit details if you can.

54 male, started at 0.5 mg weeks 1-4 then moved to 0.8 mg week 5. Running a 300-500 calorie deficit most days, sometimes more. Doing lifts, cardio, and tracking intake. I feel like a strong responder, but I mainly wanted reta to give me better control over eating rather than kill appetite completely. I can still eat when I want, just without the intense hunger driving me. Breakfast and lunch are lean protein, shakes, rice, and egg whites; dinner is whatever the family eats but I focus on the protein and cut back on carbs.

LevelThistle44archiveMay 8

Without a deficit you won't drop weight on reta. I've averaged roughly a 1250 calorie daily deficit over 21 weeks. Trying to pin down the exact deficit by counting is pretty pointless either way. I'm turning 40 at the end of the month and have a beard.

BlueKettle52archiveMay 13

The actual milligram number doesn't seem to matter much as long as you're getting the appetite and satiety effects from whatever dose you're on. I'm at 1 mg reta, eating 1500 calories a day, and lifting every day. In the end you still need the deficit to lose.

SlowThistle36archiveMay 13

37-year-old guy, 6'4", 300 lbs so TDEE is relevant. Eating 1500-1800 calories daily on 2 mg weekly reta plus 2.5 mg tirz for extra hunger control. Agree the deficit is what matters; the GLP-1 just helps keep it consistent. No magic involved. I track mainly to hit protein targets. The deficit itself has been straightforward so far.

I track calories too, but only Monday through Friday, to stay in a deficit. Opinions differ on tracking, yet I've dropped 115 lbs so the approach has worked for me. Still, it's really about keeping the deficit steady with no magic involved. You have to eat less than you burn. Calories and portions can be sneaky though.

29 years old, 175 lbs at 13-15% body fat. Taking 1 mg reta every 3 days along with 400 mcg fasted cjc/ipa in the morning. Lifting five times a week. Counting calories aiming for 2000 total and 180 g protein.

WryThistle17archiveMay 18

Doing 0.3 mg twice a week for another week or two. Running under 1000 calories a day, usually around 800. Losing weight fast, though it's not sustainable long term. I have a lot to lose and plan to raise calories and protein soon while moving the dose up to 0.4 mg twice weekly.

33 years old, 500 calorie deficit on 2 mg reta. Down about 20 kg or 40 lbs so far.

That takes serious willpower, impressive. Do you take at least one day a week to eat more and reset both metabolically and mentally?

Started reta April 1 with micro-dosing at 2 mg a week split as 1 mg Monday and 1 mg Thursday, which suits me. Began at 97 kg, now 92 kg. Weight training five days a week. Macros are 1835 calories, 160 g carbs, 175 g protein, 80 g fat. 37-year-old male.

I've gone over my usual daily deficit by 300-500 calories on some days while on 5 mg reta that week and still lost weight.

SharpBramble33archiveMay 19

6'2", started March 15 at 240 lbs around 20% body fat. Not sure reta is doing much for me. Tirz helps with food noise and cagri with suppression, but reta... not sure. I started both reta and tirz together so I can't tell what each is doing. Now May 19 at 203 lbs around 13% body fat. Also on CJC/IPA and IGF-1 LR3 the last three weeks, which probably helped keep muscle.

PatientCompass47archiveMay 26

Just started a cut with a 400-500 calorie deficit. 51 years old, 200 lbs, 15% body fat. Aiming to reach 10-12%. Eating 185-200 g protein daily, lifting four days a week, fasted cardio five days a week, and staying very active.

Forgot to mention I'm using 2 mg a week, just started.

CopperMarble58archiveMay 26

How are you figuring your total daily burn? My BMR is around 2042. 47 years old, 5'11", 255 lbs. Getting 11k-15k steps for 750-1000 calories and lifting 4-5 times a week but not counting those. Guessing I'm over 3500 calories burned daily? Eating 1350-1800 calories with 180-200 g protein. On reta five weeks: 2 mg first four weeks, then 4 mg the fifth. Started at 264 lbs. Expected faster loss in that kind of deficit.

AmberBeacon59archiveMay 26

At fifty years of age I stand one hundred seventy six centimeters tall and currently weigh seventy kilograms at fifteen percent body fat. My aim is reaching ten to twelve percent body fat without shedding much additional mass overall. Two and a half years back I began at ninety six kilograms using one medication and dropped more than twenty kilograms before regaining some ground. That led me to try a different route involving two compounds taken together each week at four milligrams and one milligram on the same schedule. Calories go untracked yet five kilograms have come off over two months. Hunger stays low and fullness arrives quickly at these amounts. It remains unclear whether either substance alone or both together drive the results since both started on the same day but that hardly matters given the solid progress and lack of noticeable issues so far.

Around 2 lbs a week sounds like a healthy sustainable pace. When you have a lot to lose it's easy to get impatient, but steady weekly drops mean you're on track.

WryMarble87archiveMay 26

At 9 mg with a 500-800 calorie daily deficit. Body has adapted and loss has slowed. Within 15 lbs of goal weight now.

Some have already said this but it's worth repeating because it's key for anyone reading: the only way to lose is to take in fewer calories than you use. These meds help because they naturally lower how many calories you want. Needs differ by goals and starting point, so use a TDEE calculator for a baseline then create a moderate deficit from there. Expect 0.5-2 lb drops per week if tracking accurately. Strength training and hitting protein help avoid losing muscle. I'm 5 ft and went from 135 to 105 lbs on tirz over a year, with most loss happening after month three.

CopperHarbour29archiveMay 27

2 mg, eating 1700-1800, TDEE around 3300.

KeenHarbour69archiveMay 27

That advice is basically perfect. Keep it simple and be honest about intake versus output.

KeenKettle50archiveMay 27

Retatrutide does raise basal metabolic rate directly, and you can't measure that yourself, so how do you know your exact calorie burn, especially with Hashimoto’s?

BlueSignal39archiveMay 27

51 male, three weeks on 2 mg. Around 1400 calories. Down just under 15 lbs, most probably water weight.

KeenHarbour69archiveMay 28
↳ replying to @KeenKettle50

We don't know the exact extent of any metabolic boost, so it makes sense to use your average BMR and just enjoy any extra help from reta. Most people overthink it. If you're not losing, you're almost certainly not in a deficit, so adjust.

RustCinder98archiveMay 28

My dose is 4 mg with a 300 calorie deficit.

WarmPebble39archiveMay 28

50 male. Eating about 1370-1390 calories daily for what feels like a moderate deficit. TDEE calculator says max around 2400, which should mean 2-4 lb loss per week, but that's not happening yet. Workouts: weights plus rowing Monday Wednesday Friday, rowing only Tuesday Thursday. Down 4.8 lbs or 2 kg in nearly six weeks, averaging 1 lb a week. Dosing: 2 mg week 1, 4 mg weeks 2-5, now moving to 6 mg to see if it changes anything. No negative sides and hunger is controlled.

Male, 27, 236 down to 210 lbs after nine weeks on reta, currently 4.66 mg weekly split every three days. 1000-1500 calorie deficit, only cardio, protein prioritized but not counted. If no loss for a month, eat less. If loss stalls while still in a deficit, refeed a week then drop again. Are you sure every bit of oil and everything is counted? I tend to overestimate what I eat to stay safe. At your age maybe hormones are involved? Are you on reta or tirz?

WarmPebble39archiveMay 28
↳ replying to @QuietSignal61

Still here and not giving up. Calorie counting could have small errors but it's basically black coffee, two protein shakes, 2-3 L water with occasional electrolytes, steamed broccoli or raw peppers, chicken or steak with light seasoning and maybe a tablespoon of olive oil, plus one or two small squares of 80% dark chocolate. It's been frustrating. Next steps include trying a different batch. There might be hormonal or hereditary factors too, but I still think I can push through.

QuietSignal61archiveMay 28
↳ replying to @WarmPebble39

Yeah that sounds rough. I was going to ask about the source because 4 mg starting week two should feel pretty rough. I'm at 4.66 mg weekly for five weeks and still get sick the day of and day after the shot.
