How it is thought to work (on hair)

The base of every hair follicle contains dermal papilla cells — specialised cells that act as the follicle's control room, setting how much it grows. In a 2007 study, AHK-Cu stimulated the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells and lengthened human hair follicles grown outside the body (ex vivo)1.

Two signals seemed to matter. AHK-Cu raised vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which supports the tiny blood vessels that feed a follicle, and lowered transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), a signal linked to pushing follicles into their resting, shedding phase1. More blood supply and less "time to rest" is, in theory, a follicle-friendly combination.

In plain terms: in the lab it nudged hair-follicle cells to grow and fed them better — but that was in a dish and in isolated follicles, not on people's heads.

The honest summary: the direct AHK-Cu hair data is essentially one line of laboratory work, backed by the broader (and much stronger) copper-peptide biology built around GHK-Cu. In practice AHK-Cu shows up in topical scalp serums and injectable "mesotherapy" hair cocktails, often alongside GHK-Cu and growth factors — cosmetic uses described here for context, not as a recommendation.

Honest limits

  • No robust human hair-loss trials. The follicle results are from cells and isolated follicles, not controlled studies in people — a long way from proof that it regrows hair on a scalp.
  • It is a cosmetic ingredient, not an approved drug. Unlike minoxidil or finasteride, which have large human trials and regulatory approval for hair loss, AHK-Cu is used cosmetically without that evidence base.
