MGF stands out from most "muscle peptides" because it isn't foreign to your body at all. What it is
In 1996, Geoffrey Goldspink's group discovered that the IGF-1 gene splices differently when muscle is mechanically stressed, producing a distinct variant they named mechano growth factor (MGF) — formally IGF-1Ec45. It is the same gene as regular IGF-1, but a different "tail" (the C-terminal E-domain) that gives it its own short-term, local job.
The "MGF peptide" sold for injection is not the whole molecule — it is a synthetic 24-amino-acid piece (the E-domain, sometimes written MGF-Ct24E) translated from that muscle-specific splice4.
How it is thought to work
Muscle grows and repairs using satellite cells — muscle stem cells that sit dormant until damage or overload wakes them up, at which point they multiply and fuse into fibres to add nuclei and rebuild2. MGF appears to be one of the early "wake-up" signals: when muscle is stretched, overloaded, or damaged, the IGF-1 gene splices toward MGF, and MGF expression tracks with satellite-cell activation21.
In cells, the synthetic MGF E-peptide increased muscle-precursor (myoblast) proliferation — the observation that made it look like a promising candidate for muscle-wasting disorders4.

What the studies actually found

Read the pattern: every strong result is about the endogenous molecule (made by trained muscle) or about cells in a dish. The leap the marketing makes — that injecting the synthetic peptide grows muscle in humans — has no controlled human trial behind it.
The honest gaps
- No human efficacy trials. No randomised study shows injected MGF (or PEG-MGF) builds muscle or strength in people. The human data is about your own muscle making MGF after exercise, not about injecting it.
- It is very unstable. The synthetic MGF peptide breaks down in blood within minutes. That short life is exactly why the modified version, PEG-MGF, exists — pegylation is a stability patch, not new evidence.
- It is a doping agent. MGF is treated as a prohibited substance in sport and is something anti-doping labs actively test for4 — a sign it is used, not a sign it works or is safe.
Regulatory status
