Sugar and carb cravings on Reta versus Tirz

61 replies39 peopleMar 2, 2026☆ Follow
Summary

Why do sugar and carb cravings appear or change differently on Reta compared with Tirz, and what helps manage them?

Users report inconsistent patterns: strong sweet cravings on low-dose Reta that only partly ease at higher doses, while Tirz often removes cravings quickly but they can return after months; the opposite also occurs with munchies on Tirz or random carb urges on Reta. Suggested fixes include raising simple carbs, switching to complex sources such as oatmeal, or adding half-and-half. Proposed mechanisms involve blood-glucose crashes at higher Reta doses, dopamine-reward shifts after stopping alcohol, and possible allergies. Stacking Reta with cagrilintide or semaglutide is mentioned for stronger suppression, and Tirz is noted to reduce alcohol cravings.

I'm taking 2.5 mg of Reta every five days. I never used to have much interest in sweets, but now I feel like eating sugary junk almost daily. I might need to raise the dose since I've been on this amount for six weeks, though the urge still shows up even when I do go higher, just not as strong. Wondering if anyone on Tirz runs into the same thing.

WarmWillow50archiveMar 2

Tirz stopped those cravings for me right from the start. From what I've seen about Reta, the strong appetite suppression that helps with weight loss kicks in later and at higher doses. Folks often keep some hunger but still end up eating less overall. I'll leave the detailed answers to others, but that's my take on the Tirz side.

SlowBramble78archiveMar 2

On Tirz I ended up with serious sugar munchies. I really like these particular treats and joke that I should own part of the company.

ClearBeacon24archiveMar 2

My son has been using 8 mg for nearly three months and tells me the sugar cravings have started hitting him too.

LevelThistle44archiveMar 2

Yesterday I went through a 500-calorie bag of Nerd Clusters. It felt more like a deliberate choice than something I couldn't stop, and I don't do that sort of thing often. It's the most sugar I've had in one day for quite a while.

RustKettle37archiveMar 2

I get random cravings for carbs. At the same time my eyes are way bigger than my stomach these days. I'm on Reta, by the way.

PatientAlder46archiveMar 2

I have a big sweet tooth and Tirz wiped it out completely for about six months. Then one day it dropped by roughly half. I can still turn down sweets better than before, but it now takes real effort.

WarmSparrow60archiveMar 3

I notice the bakery section when I walk past it in the store, but then my brain tells me to abort and I head straight for the produce instead.

SharpCinder28archiveMar 3

Sugar cravings are probably just the body's way of pushing us toward healthy starches like corn and sweet potatoes.

GreenWillow98archiveMar 3

On Tirz I don't get sugar cravings, though I didn't have much of one before starting anyway.

Carbs are more my thing than sweets. Usually a half a baked potato and everything feels fine again.

BlueMarble65archiveMar 3

A couple other people I know feel the same and their go-to sugary item is the old bottlecaps candy.

I really am a pharmacist. Just to be clear, anything I say here is only for entertainment and not professional advice.

GreyBeacon50archiveMar 3

I never had much of a sweet tooth before, but after a year on Tirz I sometimes buy twin snakes even though my total calories are way lower.

Are you still losing weight? If that's your goal and it's happening, why raise the dose?

SharpHarbour71archiveMar 3
↳ replying to @SharpCinder28

The thing is I'm already eating a decent amount of good carbs during the day.

SharpHarbour71archiveMar 3

I'm at my target weight so I'm just using a low 2 mg per week maintenance dose.

The root beer flavor is the best one and nobody can tell me otherwise.

QuietAnchor28archiveMar 3

I get the sweet tooth on Reta every now and then even though I did carnivore for three years and sweets weren't a big deal for me. I'm on 2.5 mg of Reta for maintenance and have been there a long time. It just helps keep the fork out of my mouth.

WarmHarbour52archiveMar 3

I don't have any cravings at all. I used to really like Cheetos but now they taste awful.

BluePebble18archiveMar 3

Not me. I don't get cravings on Tirz.

BluePebble18archiveMar 3

Lots of foods just don't taste the way they used to. I eat because I need to, not because I want to.

I don't have cravings myself, but my wife gets them sometimes. Those treats sound interesting and apparently have zero net carbs.

SlowBramble78archiveMar 8

I love those too, especially the zero sugar tropical punch drink.

SharpHarbour71archiveMar 16

I started eating more simple higher-glycemic carbs like basmati rice, potatoes, and whole grain bread from Trader Joe's, and that has cut down the sugar cravings a lot. The lower glycemic complex carbs weren't enough for me on Reta.

PatientFenwick39archiveMar 16
↳ replying to @SharpHarbour71

Interesting. For me it was switching to more complex carbs like oatmeal that fixed the issue.

WryCompass22archiveMar 16

This might sound random, but do you have allergies, like seasonal ones that basically last all year? Do they get worse at certain times, like right now? I'm on 10.5 of Tirz plus a low dose of survo and my cravings went through the roof once my allergies got bad the last month and a half. No real data, just wondering.

WryCompass22archiveMar 17
↳ replying to @SharpHarbour71

Darn. Still glad you don't have them though, because it's really bad out there right now.

NorthCinder50archiveMar 17

Same experience here. Only on my second week of Reta and the sugar cravings are hitting hard. Never had that on Tirz.

KeenWillow72archiveMar 17

I know those sweet cravings well. The annoying part, which happened with both Sema and Tirz, is that it's like an inner tickle that keeps triggering until I give in. I feel empty and useless if I don't give in or, oddly, when the tickle stops and I miss the dopamine hit. Anyone have a way to handle this?

RustBeacon82archiveMar 17

Before Tirz I was a total sugar junkie and couldn't get enough, chocolate every single day. Tirz killed those cravings completely. I used to hate plain water and had to add sweet flavor packs. Tried one recently and couldn't even finish a sip. The only issue now is I'm from the south and sweet tea was everything, but I can't drink it anymore. It's a good change but I'll miss it. I still don't like plain water, but the cirkul bottle lets me control the flavor strength.

Half and half tea works as a good step toward cutting sugar and calories.

CopperSparrow39archiveMar 19
↳ replying to @SlowBramble78

Same here. Gummy stuff like nerd clusters and gummy bears are the problem. Chocolate never interested me much, which is funny because that used to be my weakness.

I think these GLP-1 meds might trigger some kind of immune response. When I tried retatrutide and tirzepatide on different weeks, I'd get a runny nose and flu-like feeling from shot day through day three, then it would mostly clear up from day four to seven, like clockwork.

CopperMarble87archiveApr 5
↳ replying to @SharpHarbour71 (opening post)

Yes, when my blood sugar drops I crave sugar and can eat ice cream even on the max doses of reta or tirz. It surprises people but that's just how it is.

KeenSignal54archiveApr 5

Tirz shut down my sweet cravings and my obsession with bread and baked goods right at the first dose. It felt like a dream. After about five months I can tell it's losing a little effectiveness, some cravings are returning and I have to push back against them. I've also started letting myself eat a bit more because too much restriction can backfire.

WarmAlder92archiveApr 5
↳ replying to @NorthAnchor76

Was that tested for endotoxins beyond just sterility? Do you filter? Some of the 30 mg orange top Tirz out there apparently tests high for endotoxins and that could explain the reaction. Same concern with sterility, though you'd probably notice the vial getting cloudy later if bacteria were growing.

QuietAlder20archiveApr 5

Seems like the dopamine hit plays a big role. The brain hunts for that reward somehow. After dropping alcohol I switched straight to sweets for the fix. The medication wiped out those sweet urges right away at first. Later on the craving for dopamine kicked back in and pushed me toward anything at all. These days I feel that same satisfaction hit when another box of the powder lands at the house and the downstairs freezer is basically stuffed.

NorthAnchor76archiveApr 5

I obtain my prescribed tirzepatide directly from the pharmacy.

WarmAlder92archiveApr 6
↳ replying to @NorthAnchor76

For the branded injector it's surely pharmaceutical quality and I assume most remote doctor pharmacies test everything before mixing in B6 yet they source the base material from overseas too just on a bigger scale. Some might purchase the pure ingredients but I have come across containers that appeared already mixed with fresh stickers placed over removed tops. When profits tighten or they look toward selling out testing could slip. I would like to rely on those pharmacies yet I have zero in spas. I started with the approved version then moved to compounded and later to the unverified market.

BrightTimber93archiveApr 7

Tirz stops any kind of longing for me entirely. This change has been enormous and quite odd to mentally accept.

BlueSignal96archiveApr 7

I tried including a bit of the other compound when extra support seemed necessary. This version only reaches roughly forty percent of the potency that the popular option delivers for the GLP-1 receptor activity. The addition handled the shortfall effectively in my case. Developing the product meant fitting three separate actions into one molecule. The emphasis went toward greater strength on the GIP and glucagon sides instead of focusing only on hunger reduction.

IronWillow59archiveApr 7
↳ replying to @BlueSignal96

From what I gather this one impacts an alternate route by linking to amylin receptors instead of functioning as a GLP activator. Your observation about it having reduced strength on the GLP-1 activator part clarifies why some pair it with those other two. On my end it doesn't deliver sufficient hunger control in the week I require it the most which is why I aim to mix it with that combined version for the upcoming period. My reasoning is that engaging four distinct processes at reduced intensity may pose fewer risks of lasting consequences than intensely activating just a single receptor. Not sure if this aligns with medical views so anyone can point out if it doesn't.

SlowBramble73archiveApr 7

I recently made a post like this one about wanting sweets on reta. That issue only showed up after I reached 8mg each week. It faded after a while. What stood out most was my blood sugar falling to risky levels from skipping too many carbs. Weight loss plus five gym sessions weekly and a focus on protein from lower hunger left my system short on fuel. So I now test levels twice a day to catch any big drops. When readings get too low I grab a small bowl of oats and follow it with a protein drink. The oats lift the sugar while the protein stretches out how fast the carbs process. It surprised me since I had never run into low blood sugar earlier, most likely from carrying extra weight and holding reserves. Morning tests fell to the 45 to 31 range. After some reading I figured my metabolism had grown overly effective and that triggered the sweet cravings. I'm no expert but I sorted it out with an AI chat.

SteadyCinder62archiveApr 7

Considering the extended effects on the body from this medication over months or years makes sense. When my thoughts urge for more starches and sweets, supplying a little extra fuel to stores can help, provided it doesn't turn into uncontrolled eating. For me the top outcomes came from sticking with lifting weights plus running sessions. During periods when I desired carbohydrates those activities ran smoothly with good strength. Pounds dropped and muscles defined anyway. Reaching the target size means ending the reduced intake phase and instead facing the mental damage from long years of viewing particular items as forbidden.

ClearThistle78archiveApr 7

I find it curious how these substances impact folks in unique ways. My experience runs counter to that, as it eliminated my craving for sugary treats while raising my general appetite levels. Nevertheless I favor it more, perhaps since this matches what ordinary hunger feels like.

ClearThistle78archiveApr 7
↳ replying to @BlueSignal96

Might tossing in a little semaglutide along with reta boost the way it cuts down on hunger? I think I read that you shouldn't combine triz with reta as they could work in opposition to each other, yet nothing like that has come up for sema.
